Plastic Surgery- Know the risks

Cosmetic surgery is increasingly becoming common parlance with more and more people opting for it. According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in their annual report for 2013, 15.1 million cosmetic procedures had been conducted in the US alone, of which breast augmentation continues to be the topmost cosmetic surgical procedure. With more and more awareness available about procedures and the attitude towards surgery gradually shifting from ‘luxury’ to ‘necessity’, you should be as educated and informed as possible if you are looking to undergo surgery. Don’t go by the hogwash offered by reality shows that only present the photo finished picture. Like most surgeries, cosmetic surgery too carries its fair share of risks, hence, it would be wise to consult with your surgeon and completely understand what you are going for before you sign on the dotted line. No two people will react to the same surgery in the same way. A person’s genetic make-up and/or lifestyle play a huge role in determining the occurrence and extent of a particular side effect. We aim to provide here a quick list of things to keep in mind, hope this helps: –

Ask, ask, ask

Any cosmetic procedure is largely life altering, so if you are hesitant with the one person who is going to make that change in your life, your chances of encountering complications go up. Your surgeon’s responsibility is not limited to operating. He should be able to satisfactorily answer all your questions and inform you about the possible benefits and risks of the opted procedure. Your doctor should be certain that this procedure is appropriate for you and the risk to benefit ratio is balanced.

Let him know

This is definitely not the time to feel shy! Your surgeon is the friend you need to be frank with and inform about your medical history, lifestyle details, share your concerns and get answers to as many questions as possible. Volunteer information about any medication you have been on till date and lifestyle habits you follow.

Choose the right doctor

Be sure to consult with a surgeon who is certified by the country’s board of plastic surgery. Ask your doctor about his area of specialisation and also if he has the credentials to perform surgery in a hospital. You should be able to completely trust this person and feel comfortable and assured in his guidance.

Listen to your doctor

It is very important that you follow your doctor’s advice to the tee, during, pre and post-operation. Regularly attend follow up appointments. Be open to the fact that your body may not respond well to the surgery. You may have contracted an infection, your blood may have clotted, you may have bloated because of fluid build-up, your skin maybe scarring and needs to be surgically removed. Whatever be the scenario keep your surgeon informed and explore the best remedial procedure. While some side effects are only temporary, some others may be permanent. Keep your expectations realistic at all times. The surgery is an important step but more important is the steps that lead up to it. Be informed, be reasonable and most importantly love yourself. All the best!
