Although we naturally relate “breasts” to women, we might need to broaden our mindset. Male Breast Reduction, or Gynaecomastia Reduction (as its correct label) is a common reality, with the details of which might be surprising. Simplistically, Gynaecomastia refers to the unusual growth of the male breasts due to the enlargement of the glandular tissue. It results from a deregulation in the balance of estrogen (female hormones) and androgen (male hormones) levels in favor of estrogen, being more likely to occur in the infancy, puberty or in middle-aged to older adult males. Apart from being caused by transient changes in hormone levels (growth or age related), this hormonal unbalance might also be a result of other medical and health conditions, a side effect of the use of certain medications or caused by drug abuse (like alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin or anabolic steroids). Although unaesthetic, probably physically embarrassing and psychologically distressing to the individual, it is a benign condition and, if occurring during infancy and puberty, most cases spontaneously resolve without treatment. Nonetheless, persistent cases after puberty and cases associated with these other situations will require proper medical attention and treatment, through the use of medication (early stages of the condition) or, more usually, resorting to surgical removal of the tissue (the Gynaecomastia Reduction). Curiously, Gynaecomastia is usually confused with Pseudogynecomastia, which regardless of a similar problem appearance is caused by the increase of fat (and not gland tissue) in the breast area. Associated with the body weight increase, its relatively simple to solve with the correct diet and exercise plan, otherwise plastic surgery (liposuction or excision) can be considered as a solution.
