Breast Affairs – On Having Babies and Implants at the Same Time

Many women considering breast augmentation are still quite young, and wish to make their new breasts create an instant impact on their life as soon as possible. But most of them also have questions for the future, and “Will I be able to breastfeed my baby?” is the most common of all. Let’s clarify: it is the common opinion among medical professionals that breast augmentation should not interfere with your ability to breastfeed in any way. If you are able to breastfeed before breast augmentation, you should be able to breast feed after. Moreover, the implants used for breast augmentation are safe and do not represent any danger to your baby’s health. Firstly, the silicone implants used today don’t leak. They are made of cohesive gel, a soft consistent type of silicone that avoids leakage in the improbable moment where the implant capsule is breached. Even if they did, studies show that silicone molecules are too large to pass into the milk ducts and breast gland tissue. Scientifically saying, breast implants filler materials are “biological inert”.  Meaning: silicone gel is indigestible and saline implants filler is nothing but harmless salt water. The FDA also conducted numerous tests and studies that have demonstrated that silicone gel implants are not cause of disease (and therefore FDA approved again silicone gel implants into the market in 2006). Having said this, a periareolar incision can, in rare cases, disturb the breast feeding ability, if the milk ducts, nerves of the nipple or other breast tissue (that are connected to the nipple) are damaged during surgery. Even so, disturbed does not mean unable. Again, although rare cases, they’re worth the note in the consultation with your doctor. However, the truth is, although breastfeeding is one of the most natural processes in nature, not every women is able to breastfeed independently whether having had or not had breast augmentation. Until you actually go through pregnancy and get to the point in which you should breastfeed, you probably won’t know if you can actually do it. Just for a final note/curiosity: other studies say that breastfeeding does not cause sagging or affect negatively the look of the breast for itself, whether you do or not have breast implants. Just in case that doubt crossed your mind too.
