Botox®: What the doctor says Frown lines, forehead furrows and crow’s feet are a long-term result of the repetitive folding of skin from daily emotions. Decades ago, people attempted to fix these wrinkles in a hush-hush manner. Now – everyone is having normal conversations about getting Botox®. Botox® is a purified protein called Botulinum toxin type A produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It is used to relax the muscles temporarily on targeted areas by blocking nerve impulses that trigger contractions. This softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and around the eye area. When the Botox® is injected into your skin, it feels like an ant bite for about 10 seconds. The pinching sensation eventually fades away. The number of injections needed varies with every individual, depending on the extent of the area being treated. Be sure to not rub or massage the treated areas – this causes the toxin to move to a different area. Botox® injections are usually done in a clinic and you will be able to resume your daily activities right after the procedure. Botulinum toxin injections usually begin working a few days after treatment and you’ll need regular follow-up injections to maintain the effect. The side effects of the treatment are not permanent. Some of the most common ones are pain, swelling, drooping eyelids or bruising at the injection site. You may also experience flu-like symptoms, headache, and an upset stomach. It is advisable to not use Botox® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
